Kurt Hazlewood, Manager at Bailey Nelson
Kurt is a seasoned retailer serving 12-plus years at the front line of the retail industry.
Like many, he started this retail career while studying his double major in Art History and Classical Studies at University, with his first job as part-time sales at Sunglass Hutt.
He went on to work full-time as an assistant manager at Sunglass Hutt and having a love for style and fashion, he also wrote a fashion blog for the company.
Kurt has run retail flagship stores across all major New Zealand cities and likes premium brands having worked for Sportscraft, Adidas, and H & M among others during his time in the retail sector.
Kurt is very passionate about the products he sells and fits the Bailey Nelson company mantra of hiring people who are passionate and genuine.
This also fits his personal mantra, which is a love of quality with affordability, and reflects what he sees Christchurch offers as a place to live.
Being born in Ashburton and having lived in every major city in the country, we were keen to ask why Christchurch.
A lot has changed since our forefathers first built Christchurch and having the earthquakes enabled us to rebuild the city in our own image. It's now a modern city.
I love the quality of life here, it's affordable, no commute and you are able to have a closer relationship with the city centre. Christchurch is also the heart of the South Island and with easy access to my favourite place, Queenstown.
What do you like most about our city centre?
It has a place for everyone. Like when the protests were happening, it bought people in, and as long as they were respectful, it was ok. The busker’s festival’s silent disco was also great just watching people having fun.
Do you have any favourite places for lunch or dinner when in the city?
The Butcher’s Pie Shop at Riverside, Dimitri’s Souvlaki’s, and there is a place in there that does a really nice hash brown / Avocado smash dish.
We have a lot of choices for dinner in the city but The Terrace has something for everyone and it's all close so you can walk around and find a place to suit most moods.
Where do you like going shopping for fashion?
I like good quality and affordable clothes, which H & M offers, and Ballantynes, good quality classical style clothing.
What do you see as the emerging opportunities for Christchurch?
The biggest opportunity for us is the completion of the anchor projects, which include the Stadium and the Metro Sports facility. Having these finished will complete our city offer.
